Walter Magaya Sparks Outrage After Saying Chivayo Died “The Rich Man’s Way”

Prophet Magaya's Comments on Wicknell Chivayo's Death Leave Zimbabweans Divided

Zimbabwean prophet Walter Magaya has sparked debate after commenting on the death of businessman Wicknell Chivayo in a helicopter crash. Speaking days after the tragedy, Magaya said the manner of Chivayo’s death was connected to his wealthy lifestyle and compared it with the 2020 helicopter death of NBA star Kobe Bryant. His remarks have since drawn both support and criticism online.

Magaya made the comments while speaking about Chivayo’s death and the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash.

He argued that people can face accidents involving the same forms of transport they use in their everyday lives.

“This is the way of the rich,”

Magaya said, before referring to Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash.

He then compared helicopter travel with other forms of transport, saying someone who rides a bicycle could die in a bicycle accident, while someone who travels in a helicopter could meet the same fate.

Magaya’s comments were reported after an interview on October 3, several days after Chivayo died.

Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, died when their helicopter crashed in the Marondera area of Zimbabwe on September 30.

Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that there were no survivors from the crash. The exact number of people aboard has been reported differently by various outlets as authorities continued working to establish the circumstances of the accident.

Chivayo was a prominent Zimbabwean businessman known for his flashy lifestyle and close relationships with senior political figures.

The helicopter had been travelling from the area where Chivayo was overseeing construction of a family home. Initial accounts pointed to difficult weather conditions, although investigations into the crash were still ongoing.

The controversy was not simply about Magaya’s explanation of how accidents happen.

A number of social media users felt that his focus on Chivayo’s wealth ignored the other people who died in the same crash.

One commenter questioned whether the other passengers had also somehow died according to the “level” of their lives.

Another defended Magaya’s argument, pointing out that people who use motorcycles, trucks and other forms of transport can also die in accidents involving those vehicles.

Others responded with Bible verses or simply criticised Magaya for speaking about the tragedy in such terms.

The disagreement has therefore centred on whether Magaya was making a point about risk and lifestyle or whether his choice of words was inappropriate so soon after a fatal accident.

Magaya had earlier addressed Chivayo’s death

Magaya had already spoken publicly about Chivayo’s death before making the comments that caused the latest reaction.

On the day the crash happened, the prophet became emotional while addressing his congregation after receiving reports that Chivayo’s helicopter had gone down.

Magaya said he had spoken to Chivayo earlier that day and appeared deeply affected by the news.

Two days later, while speaking to mourners at the Chivayo family home, Magaya was also asked why none of Zimbabwe’s prominent prophets had predicted the businessman’s death.

He said divine revelation was ultimately determined by God and that prophets could not decide what was revealed to them.

His latest comments have now shifted the conversation from prophecy to the circumstances of Chivayo’s death and the role his wealth played in the way he travelled.

The reaction shows how quickly public conversations around a high-profile death can move beyond the tragedy itself. In this case, Magaya’s comments have opened a debate about wealth, risk, personal lifestyle and how public figures should speak about a fatal accident while questions surrounding the crash are still being investigated.
