A Nairobi court has sentenced a man to one year in prison or an alternative fine of KSh 100,000 after he was found guilty of shoplifting from a Naivas supermarket.

The accused, identified as Alvin Linus Chivondo, was convicted of stealing essential household items valued at KSh 3,165. According to court proceedings, Chivondo took 5 kilograms of rice, 5 litres of cooking oil, 2 kilograms of sugar, and other assorted goods without paying.

Arrest and Charges

The incident occurred at a branch of Naivas Supermarket within Nairobi. Security personnel apprehended the suspect before he could leave the premises, leading to his arrest and subsequent arraignment in court.

He was charged with theft, an offence under Kenyan law, and later convicted after the court reviewed the evidence presented.

Court Ruling

In its ruling, the court handed Chivondo a one-year custodial sentence. However, he was given the option to pay a fine of KSh 100,000 in lieu of serving the jail term.

The sentencing has sparked mixed reactions among members of the public, with some questioning the severity of the penalty given the relatively low value of the stolen goods, while others argue it serves as a deterrent against rising cases of shoplifting.

Rising Shoplifting Cases

Retail outlets across Nairobi have in recent months reported an increase in shoplifting incidents, particularly involving basic commodities. Economic pressures have been cited by some as a contributing factor, although authorities continue to warn against taking the law into one’s own hands.
