Wife of Kenyan Pilot Waweru Mwangi Breaks Silence on Claims She Left Him Penniless

The wife of veteran pilot Captain Waweru Mwangi has responded to his claims that she left him penniless and moved family property into her name. In a new interview, Mrs Waweru said she carried the family’s finances through his years without a salary, denied blocking reconciliation, and pointed to four court cases he has filed against her. The couple, married for more than three decades, are divorcing.

Captain Waweru’s side of the story went viral last week. He described coming home to find movers emptying the house, receiving divorce papers at his Muthaiga residence, and discovering that property he believed was shared had allegedly been transferred to his wife’s name.

Now his wife has given her own account, and it is a very different picture.

Her version of the money

Mrs Waweru says the family’s finances collapsed long before the divorce. She claims her husband was demoted from captain to first officer and never told her, that his salary stopped in 2011, and that a bank loan on their home ballooned to KSh 40 million before the house was sold for KSh 43 million.

She says that when he was dismissed in 2016 and paid KSh 26.5 million, he deposited it in her account but kept control of it himself.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, she said she handed everything back: “I gave him the ATM, checkbook and PIN.”

The couple then bought a Kileleshwa apartment for KSh 21.5 million in 2018, she says. She insists the school she runs was built on land she bought from her mother’s neighbour, not on his money.

Assault claim and a kidney

Mrs Waweru alleges her husband assaulted her in November last year, after which the two began sleeping separately and she eventually moved out. Police have not publicly confirmed any assault report.

The family briefly reunited when their son fell sick and Captain Waweru donated a kidney to him. His wife claims he later demanded KSh 1.8 million for the donation. He has not responded publicly to that specific claim.

Four cases, no reconciliation

By her count, her husband has filed four cases against her: divorce, a challenge to the registration of her company, maintenance, and a matrimonial property suit. She says those cases, not her, are what killed any chance of reconciliation, and that she has never blocked him from visiting the school.

She also disputed the idea that a working pilot who owns companies and bought himself a machine last year could have been reduced to poverty by her.

The cases are before the courts.
