Nairobi, Kenya – A dramatic and emotional scene unfolded at the Milimani Magistrate’s Court when Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi stunned Kenyans by buying food for a suspect who openly admitted he was hungry in court.
The suspect, Nelson Ibrahim Kidero, shocked the courtroom when he told the magistrate that although life in remand was tough, his immediate problem was hunger: “Saa hii niko njaa, mheshimiwa.”
Moved by his plea, Magistrate Ekhubi asked what he wanted to eat. The accused requested the simplest of meals — bread and milk. When asked how much it would cost, he replied that it would be at least KSh 120.
In a rare act of compassion, the magistrate reached into his pocket, pulled out KSh 500, and instructed a court officer to buy the meal. The touching gesture stunned the courtroom and has since gone viral on social media, with Kenyans praising the magistrate’s humanity.
Online users hailed him as “the people’s magistrate”, calling the move a powerful reminder that justice is not just about punishment but also about compassion.
The suspect, however, still faces charges of unlawful entry into Bunge Towers. His case will be mentioned again on October 9, 2025.
But on this day, the headlines were not about crime or trial. They were about kindness. A magistrate’s small but powerful gesture of buying bread and milk for a hungry suspect has touched the hearts of millions across Kenya.
