George Ruto’s luxury convoy at Safari Rally sparks online debate over lifestyle and privilege
George Ruto, the youngest son of Kenyan President William Ruto, became an unexpected talking point at this year’s Safari Rally after videos showing him leaving the event in a luxury convoy spread widely online.
The annual Safari Rally in Naivasha, one of Africa’s most celebrated motorsport events, wrapped up on March 15 after drawing thousands of spectators, celebrities and motorsport enthusiasts. Among those spotted enjoying the race weekend was George Ruto, whose appearance at the rally quickly captured public attention.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed him watching the action trackside and later visiting garages at Hell’s Gate where teams were preparing their vehicles for the final stages of the rally.
George also spent time with friends and public figures during the event. In one widely shared photo, he posed alongside comedian and media personality Chipukeezy, who serves as Assistant Director of Protocol and Events in the Office of the President.
However, the moment that sparked the most conversation came as George departed the rally venue.

Luxury vehicles draw attention
A video circulating online showed the president’s son driving through traffic in a black Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV, commonly known as the G63. The luxury vehicle, known for its powerful V8 engine and high price tag, is considered one of the most expensive SUVs on the road.
According to automotive data published byMercedes-Benz, the G-Class is one of the brand’s flagship models, designed as a high-performance off-road vehicle that also serves as a luxury status symbol.
Observers noted that another high-end vehicle, believed to be a Lexus LX600 similar to those often used by government officials, appeared to follow behind him as part of his security detail.
Both vehicles can retail for tens of millions of Kenyan shillings depending on specifications and import duties, reflecting the growing popularity of luxury SUVs among high-profile individuals in Kenya.
At one point in the video, George briefly stopped to exchange words with Nganya Princess, a well-known personality in Nairobi’s matatu culture. George has previously been linked to investments in the matatu sector, particularly in customized public service vehicles that have become cultural icons in the city.
Social media reactions
The footage quickly ignited debate online, with some Kenyans praising George’s relaxed public presence while others questioned the optics of the lavish convoy.
Supporters described his appearance as a reflection of a modern lifestyle and youth culture associated with Nairobi’s car scene. Critics, however, raised broader discussions about wealth, privilege and the visibility of luxury among political families.
George himself appeared to respond to some of the comments, joking with followers and brushing off the debate with a lighthearted tone.
Safari Rally’s growing celebrity appeal
The Safari Rally remains one of the most prestigious events in global motorsport. It returned to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2021 after nearly two decades and has since regained international attention.
According to theWorld Rally Championship, the Kenyan race is famous for its rugged terrain, wildlife-lined stages and unpredictable weather conditions that challenge even the most experienced drivers.
Beyond motorsport, the rally has also become a major social event, attracting entertainers, politicians and influencers who gather in Naivasha during the race weekend.
George Ruto’s appearance at the event reflects how the rally has evolved into both a sporting spectacle and a cultural gathering that brings together Kenya’s political, entertainment and automotive communities.
A growing public profile
In recent months, George has increasingly appeared in public spaces tied to youth culture, including Nairobi’s biker and matatu communities.
Earlier this year, videos circulated showing him riding a dirt bike alongside a group of young riders known for their street stunts, further boosting his image among some young Kenyans.
Whether seen as a symbol of modern urban lifestyle or a lightning rod for debate about privilege, his growing visibility suggests that the president’s son is becoming a notable figure in Kenya’s social and online landscape.
