Famously referred to as the duke of Kabeteshire  Kenya’s first attorney General of African descent Charles Njonjo has today turned 101.

Njonjo is the only surviving member of Kenya’s first cabinet that was formed in 1963.

He is a formidable, powerful figure in Kenyan history and especially the Independence era where he wielded enormous influence.

The former AG is famous for his eloquence, English mannerisms and fondness for English culture, so fond that he earned the informal, and not entirely complimentary title ‘Sir’ Charles.

He is famous for his striped suits that he states he buys only in London, worn with his signature red rosebud in his lapel.

It is believed that he was one of the few people who had the ear of Kenya’s first President the late Jomo Kenyatta.

He is one of the few people who used to cruise in the late President’s limousine.
