The Kenyan music industry even with the advent of streaming continues to be a male dominated affair. The emergence of Gengetone, a rough-edged kind of music which is considered vulgar by many has led to the rise of female artists such as Ssaru.

Ssaru whose official name is Sylvia Saru has cut a niche for herself in the industry since she did a freestyle that went viral.

The viral video of her doing a freestyle is what became the first step in her journey into the limelight.

Her first music video Nyama was released in 2019.
