IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has stated that no impeached leader can be allowed to run for an elective office.

He added that the law would be applied in the upcoming by-elections in the country.

This deals a major blow to former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu who had declared his interest in vying for the Nairobi Gubernatorial by-election set for February next year.

Rumors have also been rife of former Governor Mike Sonko’s intention to run for the Machakos Senatorial by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Senator Boniface Kabaka at Nairobi hospital.

This was a week after he collapsed at an apartment along Elgeyo Marakwet road, Kilimani Nairobi County.

The by-election has been scheduled for March 2021 following a gazette notice from IEBC yesterday.

Waititu was dethroned from his seat after the senate upheld his impeachment by the Kiambu County Assembly on claims of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The impeachment of his Nairobi counterpart Mike Sonko was also upheld on similar grounds.
